Emma Watson: Elle November 2011 Photoshoot

This is a very delayed post but then again, it's always excuses, excuses with me. Emma Watson has graced Elle magazine's front cover (UK version, mind you) for it's November issue. Emma is currently promoting her new film with My Week With Marilyn with Michelle Williams, although the ever-humble Emma only mentions it when she is asked.

The shoot itself captures Emma's youthfulness, with it's bright use of colours and fun materials. Two big trends for this season are also incorporated - the 60's and clashing textures. Feathers, faux fur, knits and silk are thrown around in girly hues, adding to Emma's innocent air.
The knitted 60's ski-style hood by Jil Sander looks like it a well preserved photo from a holiday in the Alps from the Swingin' Decade and Emma's natural skin, with prominent freckles, complete with Twiggy-esque lashes add to the time-warp feel.
(Note the Louis Vuitton knit playsuit and playful bunny ears).

Of course, Emma's lead role in one of the most famous book-to-film successes means this interview does not escape a few Harry Potter based questions and insights, but it is not the basis of the interview. Her upcoming part as Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower gets a nod too, but there is more emphasis on her style and the kind of person she is herself - not the characters she plays. Emma says what she thinks about the shoot and also an acumen into her style icons and preferences.
-
"When I'm away for photo shoots, I tend to be very low-key. I tend to wear either navy blue or gray or white. So wearing all this bright pink and fluorescent colours is fun. It's like dress up. I love the 50's. I love Marilyn Monroe with her big red lips and that incredible cat eye, it's amazing. The 60's...Edie Sedgwick, I love".

After that last line, my respect for her quadrupled.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012 Favourites

My first Fashion Week post, or should I say, my first proper Fashion Week post. My own personal response to London Fashion Week which was a week ago so I'm well behind on making this, as I usually am with posts. Also, copying and pasting photos, as simple as it may be, is awfully time consuming!

Topshop Unique
I adore Topshop Unique's mashup of Egyptian and Ghetto/Street. The scarab details against the turquoise, black and gold work perfectly together, with a very authentic Pharaoh feel to it. The Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra motif on sweatshirt material stands out the most for me. It's simple but effective as it's a face everyone instantly recognizes. The second I saw this shiny-material dress, I immediately thought of this outfit Edie Sedgwick once wore which, what looks like, similar material. It could possibly the inspiration for it?

Christoper Kane
Christopher Kane's incorporation of two "at the moment" trends was another stand out for me. The very preppy cricket sweater vests over the metallic trends that resurface every Fall and Winter go wonderfully, especially in their pastel hues. LOVE!
Kinder Aggugini
This is a designer that I, so ignorantly, have never heard of before but I'm glad I have as what I've seen of his collection from LDW are lovely. The different textures (silk and velvet) go wonderfully with the peter pan collars, floral decorations and 40's style shapes of the dresses -for the two on the left anyway- and contrast, not clash, with the modern Converse-tipped heels. Note to self: look out for this guy in the future.
Meadham Kirchhoff
As they say, save the best for last and I'm not going to go against timeless clichés. The event that was Meadham Kirchhoff's show was, by the far, the single highlight of LFW. The clothes, the little ballet dancers, the pastel colours contrasting innocently with the bolder colours, as if they were chosen by a child who was given the privileged to dress herself (a style conscious child, at that). Everything about this was perfect. The outfits remind me of if a baby Harajuku Girl was in infant nursery. Everything is so fun and childish but not in an immature way. I'm really not doing it any justice, you'll have to watch the video below and decide for yourself, if you read down this far and didn't get put off by my bland choice of words and personal expression.
And to end this, I'll go back to the 'ol cliché generator by departing with:
That's all for now folks!

Girl On Fire

Edie Sedgwick, how do I even begin to explain Edie Sedgwick? Andy Warhol's muse, Twiggy's American twin, 60's style icon, actress, model, youth quaker.
My style icon and favourite person who ever lived on this planet. Anything Edie related makes me swoon. Anything 60's makes me swoon but especially Edie. I remember the day I went out with her daring makeup at the age of 14, it looked terrible. I've practised it more since then and have got it close to perfect.
Edie was no wallflower especially when it came to style. Think monochrome everything, including eye makeup.
Staples for Edie's wardrobe:

  • Black opaque tights
  • Striped Breton boat neck jumpers
  • Backless dresses
  • Shift dresses and long tshirt
  • Shoulder-dusting earrings
  • Cropped platinum hair - skip the talcum powder and silver spray and get it professionally done
  • Fur coats for those harsh New York winters
  • Monochrome, thickly lined and lashed eyes/minimal lips
  • Shoes are not necessary

You're the boss, applesauce.
